Jacopo Bellini
Madonna and Child
1448 Canvas on panel, 50 x 45 cm Pinacoteca di Brera, Milan The painting has been cut down on the sides, with the loss of sections of the framing element. Dated and signed below, in mixed Gothic and Renaissance characters: "1448 HAS DEDIT INGENI (OSA) BELINUS MENTE FIGURAS." From the church of the Servites at Riviera di Casalfiumanese, Imola. Jacopo Bellini was an "enlightened" late Gothic painter who reacted against the aestheticism of his contemporaries. He added new elements such as classical antiquities, perspective and drawing to his pictorial language. As a humanist Bellini did not go beyond the taste for antiquity. In perspective he adopted Tuscan revolutionary ideas as dogma. Although he understood the independent value of drawing, he did not see it as a method of research but as a means for systematic description. His paintings thus give a hybrid impression, as in this work which also seems to owe something to Fra Angelico.Artist:BELLINI, Jacopo Title: Madonna and Child Painted in 1401-1450 , Italian - - painting : religious

BRAMANTINO
Holy Family
1520 Poplar panel, 61 x 47 cm Pinacoteca di Brera, Milan Constructed on a series of triangular rhythms heightened by the violent tension of the drapery, which seems to absorb the figures, the composition has a rarefied atmosphere. Every gesture assumes an almost hieratic dignity, and every figure tends to take on an architectonic fixity. The figure of the Christ Child violently escapes from this formal severity. The audacious, almost explosive gesture of his arms seems to introduce the more serene and contemplative effect of the background, in which unreal, almost stage-set buildings stand out against the luminous sky. The buildings recall Bramantino's work as an architect and architectural theoretician. Of his work in this field, only the mausoleum for the Trivulzio family in Milan has survived.Artist:BRAMANTINO Title: Holy Family Painted in 1451-1500 , Italian - - painting : religious

Madonna
1445 Wood, 55,5 x 31,5 cm Museum of Fine Arts, Budapest We know very little about the life of Petrus Christus, though it is certain that in 1444 he obtained the citizenship of Bruges, then the richest town in Flanders and its main artistic centre. He may have been the pupil of Jan van Eyck, and in his surviving panel paintings we can see that his solutions to problems of composition and his figure types are similar to those of his predecessor. Indeed Christus's delicately wrought and brilliantly coloured works served to popularise the technique and manner of Van Eyck. Some fifteen to twenty works by Christus are known, one of which is The Virgin and Child, probably the surviving part of a triptych for home devotion. Framed by a semi-circular arch resting on slender columns and with a pleasant landscape in the background, the Virgin looks tenderly down at the naked Infant supported on her arm. Every detail has been painted with meticulous care - the minute wrinkles on the Infant's face, the foliage of the trees in the distance and the statuette of Adam and Eve on the columns at the sides, which, in alluding to the Fall, emphasize the coming Redemption through Christ. Other versions and copies have survived, indicating the popularity of this picture over the years, but unfortunately none of them give any clue as to when it was painted or who commissioned it.Artist:CHRISTUS, Petrus Title: Madonna Painted in 1451-1500 , Flemish - - painting : religious

The Holy Family
1470s Tempera on oak panel, 30,5 x 23 cm Museum of Fine Arts, Budapest The small-size panel obviously intended not for any church but for private devotions in the intimate milieu of a sitting-room is much like a miniature, offering to give pleasure when contemplated at close quarters. The waves of the hair - that of the Virgin undulating softly, that of Joseph more roughly in an elderly manner, the rich golden locks of the Child curling into ringlets - the objects arranged in the foreground to recall a still-life, the carefully delineated veins of the marble balustrade, all evidence this attitude. The faces, particularly that of the Virgin, are definitely of the Dutch type. The colours are gentle, melting into unassuming harmony, the forms are tranquil. The background recalling a goldsmith's work, decorated with pearls and precious stones, greatly contributes to this closed character. Apparently the picture is one of the artist's earliest works, from a youthful period, when the Baroque forms, which later became a fundamental trait of his art, had not yet become dominant.Artist:MASTER of the St. Bartholomew Altar Title: The Holy Family Painted in 1451-1500 , German - - painting : religious

The Solothurn Madonna
1522 Limewood Museum der Stadt Solothurn, Solothurn The original painting by Holbein was revealed only after restoration by Thomas Brachert in 1971; it had been completely overpainted in the Pre-Raphaelite style by the 19th century restorer Andreas Eigner. Eigner's aim was twofold: not only to "beautify" the picture, but also to cover up the many wormholes that had appeared. Restoration showed up the extensive craquelure that had been covered over and which regrettably spoils the fine modeling of the flesh tones in particular.Artist:HOLBEIN, Hans the Younger Title: The Solothurn Madonna (detail) Painted in 1501-1550 , German - - painting : religious

Darmstadt Madonna
1526 and after 1528 Oil on limewood Schlossmuseum, Darmstadt The presentation of the Madonna and Child is a triumph of illusionism that ranks with the achievements of Van Eyck in Flanders a century before. The play of light over the fluting of the architectural shell behind the two figures carves out the space into which the delicately shadowed crown, hair and face of the Madonna are set. There is no Raphaelesque regularity in the Madonna's features - as with most northern Madonnas, a specific model was used, a friend of Holbein's, one Magdalena Offenburg who also posed for the Lais and whose lifestyle, ironically, was not considered blameless. However, the compelling physical presence and credibility of the figures is the result of artistic means alone; the twisting of the child's body emphasizes the weight the Madonna's arms must carry, and Christ's projecting feet and the foreshortening of his own and his mother's arms stress the space his torso occupies. The combination of warm green and gold also brings the Madonna forward against the neutral .tone of the stonework.Artist:HOLBEIN, Hans the Younger Title: Darmstadt Madonna (detail) Painted in 1501-1550 , German - - painting : religious

Albrecht Durer
Virgin and Child before an Archway
1495 Oil on panel, 48 x 36 cm Magnani Collection, Mamiano near Parma Mary and the Christ Child sitting in her lap appear to be right in the foreground of a space which opens to one side onto a bordering interior courtyard. The baby reaches for his mother's hand and their eyes meet. While the Madonna still owes much to the Late Gothic German type, the Christ Child is reminiscent of Italian models. Half length figures such as this early picture of the Madonna were widespread in Italy and the Netherlands. The depiction of the space with the view to the side through an arch is reminiscent of Flemish models, but the figural conception and monumental triangular composition of the group of figures also relates to Italy, in particular to the Madonna paintings by Giovanni Bellini. The picture dates either from D?rer's visit to Venice in 1494-5 or soon afterwards in Nuremberg. It was discovered in the 1950s in the Capuchin monastery of Bagnacavallo, near Ravenna, and this suggests that it was painted in Italy where it has remained.Artist:D?RER, Albrecht Title: Virgin and Child before an Archway Painted in 1501-1550 , German - - painting : religious
