Here we see the philosopher Aristotle crawling about with the lovely Phyllis on his back, watched by two other men. Aristotle, who was allegedly indifferent to female beauty, nevertheless let himself be enticed and, worse still, humiliated by a woman. The artist used various kinds of shading to achieve an extremely vivid rendering of this scene, which is based on a popular thirteenth-century tale. This print is among his most outstanding work. 1835 Engraving Biblioth?que Nationale, Paris In 1834 the young French painter, Prosper Marilhat showed a view of Ezbekiyah Square, Cairo and three other Egyptian scenes at the Paris Salon. Like many of his generation, he had felt a restless urge to travel and had joined a scientific expedition led by an Austrian baron, Karl von Hugel, to the Near East. The artist was to die, insane, aged just thirty-six, and his Cairo scene survives only in a print. Even in the La Fontaine he scarcely attempted to produce accurate portraiture but concentrated on a lively, perhaps suitably anecdotal, effect, with a generalized shrewdness and vivacity in the subject's features. Julien's delicacy of handling is apparent not only in the somewhat over-detailed treatment of the hair but also in the frieze of bas-reliefs, illustrating scenes from the fables, which decorate the pedestal. The fables are yet more patently present in the slightly porcine fox, with one paw on a book, which creeps out from La Fontaine's cloak and peers up at him. In fact Olivier made marvellous nature studies of twigs and leaves but looked for more than mere truth in his finished works. His drawing of Aigen was one of a series of scenes around Salzburg and Berchtesgaden made for a set of prints of the Seven Days of the Week, each of which was associated with a particular sentiment or experience.
